Bartech Group

History

John Barfield

The Bartech Group, billing and managing $1 billion in revenue annually for our customers, is one of America’s most respected, successful and resourceful minority-owned talent acquisition and management firms. The Company evolved from a humble beginning. Founder John W. Barfield was the grandson of Alabama sharecroppers and dropped out of school at the age of 16. While serving as a custodian at the University of Michigan for $1.75 an hour, he promoted the idea that people would pay for his expertise in janitorial services. In 1954 he and his wife, Betty, established Barfield Cleaning Company. Fifteen years later, International Telephone and Telegraph Company acquired the Company at one of the highest multiples recorded in that era.

With numerous contacts within the auto industry, Mr. Barfield incorporated John Barfield & Associates in 1976 to provide technical staffing services to the Big 3 automakers. The Company changed its name to The Bartech Group in 1984. Bartech became one of the nation’s first minority-owned and operated firms specializing in technical staffing.

Bartech grew rapidly, becoming a preferred supplier to many Fortune 500 companies. It was named General Motors “Minority Supplier of the Year” in 1983 and was Black Enterprise magazine’s “Company of the Year” in 1985.

In 1986 Bartech was awarded the GM/Saturn Primary Supplier contract. Foreseeing the emerging trend of utilizing contract employees deploying computerized information systems in corporations, Bartech formed its Computer Services Division in 1991, and acquired the Charles Davis and Associates staffing firm in 1992 to further solidify its position within the IT staffing industry.

Bartech went on to win major contracts with FPL Group as a primary supplier, and as master vendor for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Florida Power Corporation, and DTE Energy. Bartech also received the highest awards for quality service from many of its global customers, including Ford’s ‘Q1’ Award and the DaimlerChrysler Gold Pentastar Quality Award. Bartech has expanded its services and geographic footprint through bold organic growth, and four strategic acquisitions within the past decade.

In 2002 Bartech acquired Michigan-based Rapid Design Service, Inc., to further enhance its capacity to staff engineering and design positions within the automotive, commercial and recreation industries. Bartech has become one of the largest, most influential providers of technical and engineering staffing support within the United States, and among the largest within the state of Michigan.

Today, managing and employing over 12,000 employees throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico, The Bartech Group continues to capitalize on its core competencies and specializes in the following areas: contingent workforce solutions, search services, staffing services, and business process outsourcing and consulting. Our success is based upon Bartech’s quality system, Striving Towards Excellence Process (S.T.E.P.), and our focus on adding value to the operations of our customer base.

The Company is highly regarded and has established an admirable reputation for integrity and responsibility.
